Matrix (of a composite)
A composite is composed of a matrix and reinforcing fibres. The matrix then represents the continuous phase that ensures cohesion, transfers and distributes stresses and protects against external aggressions. In the case of a reinforced SAMI membrane (Texgrid composite solution), the SAMI membrane will act as a matrix, while the Texgrid geogrid - embedded in the SAMI bituminous matrix - will act as a reinforcement.
A composite will have an optimal behaviour when the impregnation of the fibres within the matrix will be maximum. In the case of pavement reinforcement using geogrids, it is essential to guarantee these internal links to the composite, for example by using geogrids whose fibres are not coated with any protection, to maximise the contact zones between fibre and matrix.
